Driving Directions

Generally speaking, we are on the top floor of the tallest building in this part of midtown; the Lipscomb Pitts Insurance Building, located between Poplar and Union Avenues.  We are a half block from the downtown end of the Poplar Overpass. The building is clearly visible from both overpasses (Poplar and Union Ave.). Unfortunately we are right in the middle of a nest of  streets that change names, so please be careful about following your GPS.

From East Memphis:

– Option 1: Head inbound (toward downtown) on Poplar. Our office is a little less than 2 miles west of Highland Street. From Highland you will soon pass East High School and the (somewhat) new Central Library, and then go over the railroad overpass/bridge. Union Extended is the very first street on the other end of that bridge. You will see two tall office buildings on the right. We are on the top floor of the tallest building. Our base of operations is in Suite 1200, but we also occupy Suite 1228, down the hall and around the corner. (Note: this is one of those streets that has two different names, depending on whether you turn right or left. Union Extended is to the left, but to the right it is Collins St.)

– Option 2: You can come in on Walnut Grove, which is fine for the most part, but there is no quick way to get from Walnut Grove over to Union Extended. You will have a very good view of the building as you cross over the bridge, but if you get that far the thing to do is to go on past, turn right onto either Alicia Drive or East Parkway to get back over to Poplar, and then come back at it from the other direction. (See “from downtown or midtown,” below.) The better choice is to jog over to Poplar before reaching the overpass, and then following the final steps of Option 1, above.

From Downtown or Midtown:

– Option 1: Go east (outbound) on Union Ave. past East Parkway. The next traffic light is at Alicia/Hollywood. Get into the right lane, but do not turn right onto Hollywood. Instead, proceed through that intersection and then take the little exit on the right just past that intersection. Do not get onto the bridge. The exit curves back around to the left and becomes Union Extended. The first tall building on your left is it.

– Option 2: Go east (outbound) on Poplar Ave., past East Parkway, and continue for a few more blocks. Get into the right lane, and turn right onto Union Extended, just before the overpass. There is a Mexican restaurant called Toro Loco on your right. You will see two tall office buildings on the right. Our offices are on the top floor of the tallest building on your right.

From South Memphis:

– Option 1: Go north on Airways until it changes names and becomes East Parkway. Continue northward past the Liberty Bowl, and past Central Ave. Get into the right lane, and exit to the right onto Union Ave. Once on Union, stay in the right lane, but do not turn right onto Hollywood. Instead, proceed through that intersection and then take the little exit on the right just past Hollywood. Do not get onto the bridge. The exit curves back around to the left and becomes Union Extended. The first tall building on your left is it.

– Option 2: Go north on I-55 and/or I-240 and/or I-69. Continue north on I-240/I-69 and take Exit 30 to go east on Union Avenue. Continue eastbound on Union for almost 3 miles. After crossing over East Parkway, get into the right lane, but do not turn right onto Hollywood. Instead, proceed through that intersection and then take the little exit on the right just past Hollywood. Do not get onto the bridge. The exit curves back around to the left and becomes Union Extended. The first tall building on your left is it.

From Bartlett, Wolfchase, and anywhere else close to I-40:

Stay on I-40 all the way. When you pass the Sycamore View exit, get into the left lane to continue westbound on Sam Cooper Blvd. Go roughly 5 more miles, well beyond the end of the expressway. (After the Highland exit, Sam Cooper Blvd. changes from an interstate-type highway into a city street, but still keeps the same name.) Continue past Tillman St. and then over the railroad overpass/bridge. The next stoplight past the viaduct is Collins Street. Turn left onto Collins. Go approx. 0.7 miles to the next stoplight, which is Poplar Ave. You will see the building directly ahead on the right. (Collins St. changes names at this point and becomes Union Extended.)

From Collierville, or other Places near the Mississippi border:

– Option 1: The simplest directions would be to drive straight in on Poplar (from Highway 57 or Highway 72) and to then follow the directions shown above for coming from east Memphis.

– Option 2: However, it will almost always be faster (depending on road construction and other variables) to come in on Highway 385 (a.k.a. Nonconnah Parkway or Bill Morris Parkway). When you reach the I-240 loop, go north toward the Nashville exit, but instead of turning right onto I-40, exit to the left onto Sam Cooper Blvd (which is the section of I-40 that was originally supposed to go directly through the heart of Memphis, but was never completed). Go roughly 5 more miles, well beyond the end of the expressway. (After the Highland exit, Sam Cooper Blvd. changes from an interstate-type highway into a city street, but still keeps the same name.) Continue past Tillman St. and then over the viaduct. The next stoplight past the viaduct is Collins St. Turn left onto Collins. Go approx. 0.7 miles to the next stoplight, which is Poplar Ave. You will see the building directly ahead on the right. (Collins St. changes names at this point and becomes Union Extended.)

From Millington, Tipton County, and points North:

There are too many different ways to get to my office to describe in detail here. From Millington and points south, it is probably best to go south on Highway 51 all the way into Memphis. Turn left onto either North Parkway or Poplar Ave. If on North Parkway, go roughly 3.2 miles and turn right (southbound) onto East Parkway. Continue southbound past the first stoplight. The next stoplight will be Poplar Ave. Turn left onto Poplar and go east (outbound) on Poplar Ave. for a few more blocks. Get into the right lane, and turn right onto Union Extended, just before the overpass. You will see two tall office buildings on the right. I am on the top floor of the tallest building. If you drove past North Parkway and turned left onto Poplar near downtown Memphis, just stay on Poplar past East Parkway, and then turn right onto Union Extended, as described above.

From Covington and points farther north:

You could follow the same directions as from Millington, but it is a bit quicker to go south from Covington on College Street/Highway 384, and to take Austin Peay Highway (Highway 14) all the way into Memphis. Austin Peay changes names and becomes Jackson Ave. After that the driving directions become more complicated, and you could find yourself in uncomfortable surroundings, so if you’re not accustomed to driving in Memphis it might be best to follow the “From Millington” directions, above.

If you do choose the Austin Peay/Jackson Ave. route, the first option is to turn left (southbound) off of Jackson Ave. onto Scott St., and to continue approx. 1.7 miles. There is a ramp that leads up to Poplar Ave. Turn right onto Poplar, and then take the very next left onto Union Extended. Our offices are on the top floor of the tallest building on your right.

If you miss the turn from Jackson Ave. onto Scott St. (which is a very easy mistake to make), the next best option is to turn left (southbound) onto Trezevant St., which is a few blocks past Hollywood St. After 1/2 mile Trezevant changes names and becomes East Parkway. Continue south on East Parkway for approx. 0.7 miles, and turn left onto Poplar Ave. Stay on Poplar for just a few blocks, and then turn right onto Union Extended, just before the overpass. Our offices are on the top floor of the tallest building on your right.
